About
Eleanor has a significant international and national reputation in arts practice and education, with a strong belief in linkage partnerships, research and training. Her commitment to learning enterprise and pedagogical development is empirical to her passion for teaching and learning, particularly in the cultural and creative sector and the alliance of commercial business industries. Her enterprise in education, reflects Eleanor’s enthusiastic drive and commitment for innovating opportunities across varying sectors of industry, government and education. She established ‘onto’ as a catalyst for partnerships, project management and pathways in educational and training advancement.
Eleanor was involved with the Australian Science Festival 2010, as Deputy Director, where she was able to bring together her passion for arts and science with education, government and business. All part of leading the 2010 festival into an exciting new direction and partnership opportunities. The festival is renown for its educational activities in schools, public engagement with science research and fostering community partnership.
Research interests are central to Eleanor’s work, having been awarded Fellow at the Australian National University (2008-09) and Visiting Researcher at NICTA (2007-11), Australia’s National Information and Communication Technology Research Centre of Excellence, involved with the e-Government Research Project as part of the Managing Complexity research theme and the Australian e Government Technology Cluster. Eleanor’s investigation specialises in Visualisation & Communication of ICT Innovation.
From 2001 to 2007, Eleanor was Head of the Centre for New Media Arts (formerly the Australian Centre for the Arts and Technology) at the Australian National University. Under her direction the Centre experienced major expansion and incorporated her unique vision of new media and a cross disciplinary approach. The successful merger of the Centre with the School of Arts, brought together the significant advantages of design, arts and media across traditional art and interdisciplinary research.
Prior to her appointment as Head of the Centre for New Media Arts, Eleanor was Head of Design at Hull School of Art and Design, University of Lincoln UK and also held positions including: Head of Printmaking, Arts Advisor (Regional) British Arts Council, Director of International Printmaking Competition UK, Advisor to Arts Foundation UK, Director of TRAILBLAZE and curator for numerous public arts events.
Eleanor is a visual media artist and well-established printmaker. A prolific artist, having received numerous awards, grants, and commissions in her career. She maintains an active international artistic profile continuing her own research and roles such as curator and director of media arts events. She was the Australian curator for ‘Boom! An Interplay of Fast & Frozen Permutations in New Media’ at the 2007 International New Media Festival in Taiwan and is a regular contributor to numerous professional associations, having published since 1985 and presented papers at various conferences in the UK, Taiwan and Australia. In 2008, Eleanor was awarded a Taiwan Ministry of Education - Visiting Scholar Grant for her research activities.
Eleanor is also a PhD candidate at the Centre for the Public Awareness of Science at the Australian National University. Following her successful International Artist in Residence at University of California Santa Cruz (September - December 2010), Eleanor was made an honorary Research Professor.
