About

Peter Dean is a Fellow in the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre as well as a Senior Lecturer at the Australian Command and Staff College.  In 2011 he was a Research Associate at the United States Studies Centre (Sydney University) and a Visiting Fellow at the Centre For Australian and New Zealand Studies (Georgetown University, Washington DC).

His major research and teaching interests are in Australian military history and defence studies. He has published his work in journals such as Security Challenges, War & Society, Journal of the Australian War Memorial, Australian Policy and History and Global War Studies.  Peter is the author of a biography of Australia’s most important operations staff officer, The Architect of Victory: The Military Career of Lieutenant-General Sir Frank Horton Berryman, 1894-1981, (Australian Army History Series, Cambridge University Press), and he is currently working on  a number of projects including MacArthur’s Coalition: US & Australian Military Operations in the SWPA 1942-1945, which is being funding through a United States Studies Centre (USSC) Grant.

Peter is a managing editory to the journal Security Challenges and a contributing editor to the journal, Global War Studies. He has also worked as a peer review editor for Cambridge University and Murdoch Press. Peter is the recipient of three Australian Army History Unit Grants which facilitated overseas research in the UK and USA and in 2011 he was the recipient of a citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning in the Australian Learning and Teaching Council’s Australian Awards for University Teaching. From 2012 he will be teaching the Expeditionary Warfare module of the Master of Military Studies at the Australian Command and Staff College.

Career Highlights: Lecturer in Australian History at UNSW & UNSW Study Abroad 2001-2005, Associate Dean of Arts & Sciences at UNDA 2006-2009, Director of Research at UNDA 2010-2011, Visiting Fellow Georgetown University (Washington DC) 2011, Royal Australian Army (Reserve) 1993-2008.
