Thesis Title: Transdimensional Aprroaches to Geophysical Inverse Problems

Malcolm Sambridge

About

Research interests include inverse theory, computational seismology, earthquakes and earth structure, Bayesian statistics, and Monte Carlo Methods.

My PhD project involved developing a general inversion strategy where the number of model parameters (e.g. number of layers), as well as the level of smoothing and the required level of data fit, are treated as unknowns to be constrained directly by the data. A major focus was on situations where data constrain a 2D spatially varying field, and in particular seismic tomography. However, other geophysical applications were considered (e.g. receiver functions, regression of palaeoclimate data, surface wave dispersion curves).
